Good News For Us!
Well, it appears as if my speculation is finally coming true...
Over a year ago, I predicted that Yahoo would follow Google's AdSense lead and release a similar program of their own. They'd have to in order to keep up as Google is cleaning their clocks with the increase in revenue they are getting from AdSense.
That day is getting close. VERY CLOSE.
If you snoop around the 'Net (and know how to do it effectively) you can uncover some interesting stuff...
Like web sites running what appear to be 'experimental' Yahoo ads that are very much like AdSense ads. They are (no surprise) ads being served from Overture's database (which Yahoo owns).
Check out the ads on the leftside of this blog.
If and when Yahoo releases and AdSense competitor this is nothing but GREAT NEWS for marketers like us. AdSense is a fantastic way to make money from publishing web sites. BUT... right now it's very dangerous. There are many markets right now that wouldn't be very profitable if AdSense went away. Other affiliate programs just won't make much money on these sites. So we NEED a competitor. You never want all your eggs in one basket with anything you do with your marketing and AdSense is no exception.
A similar program from Yahoo will only spur competition with Google and most likely drive AdSense revenue higher.
Let's hope that this experimental ad program turns out to be something REAL.

Comments
They've had it for a while, haven't they?:

but for sites with more than 2 million web searches per month. Looks like that blog isn't nearly that busy...so that's totally great news if they are expanding to the little guys.

Alice, that's a different program. They've had that content program for awhile. The ads on that blog are from a new experimental program that is trying to load relevant ads based on the content -- exactly like AdSense. Their other program (that you reference) delivers keyword based ads based on a content channel that the web publisher specifies (and Overture approves). The ads on that blog are something totally different.

I am excited for the release of this as well.
Short term I think it may lower the payout on Adsense since some advertisers budget will be "split in half." But over the long haul I think it will cause both to become more profitable.

I think this site is using Yahoo ads as well

The point about eggs in one basket is very true. It's a dangerous thing to have only ONE vendor of this kind of service. Some people have made huge money with Adsense, but they are also vulnerable to being over-dependent on one revenue stream.
Since Adsense does not allow competing ads of this nature, it's going to be quite complex to implement both on the same website. However, I am sure that it is viable.

Hi John,
After reading your thoughts on this I did some further research and found some interesting info. It's too long to post here in your comments so here's the url to my latest blog post: http://www.bloglogic.net/2005/03/niche-blogs-and-ad-revenue/
What are your thoughts on this?
Respectfully,

Very exciting news. If Yahoo launches one I'm sure Bill Gates won't be far behind. We definitely could use more than one network, just in case!

Hi John,
I am getting ready to launch an e-boook and CD titled "The 10 Secrtets That Can Make You Rich."
A number of rich and famous people havd bene kind enough to give me a success quote or a few success tips to pass on to would-be entrepreneurs and info-marketers. Got quotes from Yanik Silver, Corey Rudy, Margaret Thatcher etc.
If you can contribute something I will be happy to include your resource box--and if you have a hot seller aimed at my market, maybe I could also be an affiliate?
